Application In Cellulose Pulp
1.Delignification: Sodium hydroxide is a key component in the delignification process, which aims to remove lignin from cellulose fibers. Lignin is a natural polymer that binds cellulose fibers together in wood. Sodium hydroxide breaks down lignin by hydrolyzing the ester bonds, separating it from the cellulose fibers and allowing for easier pulp production.
2.Pulping: Sodium hydroxide is used in both chemical and semi-chemical pulping processes. In the Kraft pulping process, sodium hydroxide is combined with sodium sulfide to dissolve lignin and separate the cellulose fibers. In the soda pulping process, sodium hydroxide is used alone to break down lignin. These processes help extract cellulose fibers from wood or other plant sources.
3.PH Adjustment: Sodium hydroxide is used to adjust the pH of pulp slurries during various stages of pulp production. It helps maintain the desired pH levels for optimal processing conditions, such as enzymatic treatments or bleaching.
4.Bleaching: Sodium hydroxide is sometimes used in the bleaching of cellulose pulp.
