Application In Soap Making
1.Saponification: Sodium hydroxide flakes are used in the saponification process, which is the chemical reaction that converts fats or oils into soap. This reaction involves the hydrolysis of triglycerides present in the fats or oils, resulting in the formation of soap molecules (sodium salts of fatty acids) and glycerin. Sodium hydroxide acts as a catalyst, breaking down the triglycerides into their individual fatty acid components.
2.Lye Solution: Sodium hydroxide flakes are dissolved in water to create a lye solution. This solution, also known as caustic soda solution, is then added to the fats or oils in the soap-making process. The lye solution reacts with the fats or oils, initiating the saponification reaction.
3.PH Adjustment: Sodium hydroxide is used to adjust the pH of the soap mixture during the soap-making process. The ideal pH range for soap making is typically between 9 and 10. Sodium hydroxide helps achieve this pH range by neutralizing any acidic components present in the fats or oils.
