Caustic soda flakes, also known as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), are a critical ingredient in the production of rayon, a synthetic fiber made from cellulose.
The production of rayon involves several steps, including the conversion of cellulose from wood pulp or other plant materials into a soluble form. Caustic soda is used in this process to help break down the cellulose into a more soluble form called alkali cellulose.
In the first step of the rayon production process, the cellulose is treated with caustic soda to create alkali cellulose. The caustic soda helps to break down the cellulose chains and form sodium cellulose xanthate, which is a soluble derivative of cellulose.
The alkali cellulose is then treated with carbon disulfide to create sodium cellulose xanthate, which is a yellow-orange compound that is soluble in certain solvents. This compound is then dissolved in a solvent and spun into fibers, which are washed and dried to create the final rayon product.
Caustic soda is also used in the regeneration process of rayon production. After the fibers have been formed, they are treated with an acid solution to remove the xanthate groups and regenerate the cellulose fibers. Caustic soda is used in this step to neutralize the acid solution and restore the pH of the fibers to a neutral level.
