Application In The Production Of Metal Zinc
Naoh Caustic soda , also known as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), play a role in the production of zinc metal through a process known as the electrolytic method.
In the electrolytic method of producing zinc, a zinc sulfide concentrate is roasted to produce zinc oxide. The zinc oxide is then mixed with coke (a form of carbon) and heated in a furnace to produce zinc vapor. The zinc vapor is then condensed and collected as the final product.
During the electrolytic refining process, impurities such as iron, arsenic, and sulfur are removed from the zinc by dissolving them in a solution of caustic soda. This process is known as "neutralization."
The impure zinc is first dissolved in an acidic solution to produce a zinc sulfate solution. The solution is then treated with caustic soda flakes to neutralize the acidic impurities. This results in the formation of zinc hydroxide, which is then filtered out to remove the impurities.
The purified zinc hydroxide is then dissolved in sulfuric acid, and the resulting solution is electrolyzed to produce pure zinc metal. The caustic soda is not used directly in the production of zinc metal, but it plays an important role in the purification process by neutralizing the acidic impurities and facilitating the removal of impurities from the zinc sulfate solution.
