Application In The Production Of Phenol

The production of phenol involves several steps, including the reaction of benzene with propylene to produce cumene, and the oxidation of cumene to produce cumene hydroperoxide.
Caustic soda flakes are used in the hydrolysis of cumene hydroperoxide to produce phenol. In this step, the cumene hydroperoxide is mixed with a solution of caustic soda flakes and heated to a specific temperature. The caustic soda solution serves to break down the cumene hydroperoxide into phenol and acetone.
After the hydrolysis reaction is complete, the phenol is separated from the mixture by various methods, including distillation, evaporation, and crystallization.
