Application In Cellulose Pulp
Solid caustic soda is commonly used in the production of cellulose pulp because of their ability to break down lignin, which is a complex organic polymer that binds together the fibers of wood or other plant material.
The process of breaking down the lignin with caustic soda is called "pulping" or "cooking." During this process, the wood chips or other plant material are mixed with a solution of caustic soda and heated under pressure. The heat and pressure help to break down the lignin and separate the cellulose fibers.
Once the lignin has been removed, the cellulose fibers can be further processed to make paper, textiles, or other products. The caustic soda is also used in the bleaching process to remove impurities and brighten the resulting pulp.
Caustic soda flakes are preferred over other forms of sodium hydroxide because they are easier to handle and dissolve more readily in water. They also tend to be less dusty than other forms of sodium hydroxide, which can be beneficial for worker safety and environmental concerns.
