The role of caustic soda flakes in the rayon production process is to convert cellulose into alkali cellulose, which is a key intermediate in the production of rayon.
The production of rayon involves several stages, and caustic soda is used in the first step known as the "causticization" process. During this process, cellulose is treated with a solution of caustic soda to convert it into alkali cellulose. This process involves dissolving the cellulose in a solution of caustic soda and heating it to a high temperature. The caustic soda breaks down the cellulose molecule, making it easier to dissolve and react with other chemicals. The resulting alkali cellulose is a yellowish-brown substance that is used as a precursor to rayon.
In the next step, the alkali cellulose is aged and treated with carbon disulfide to form a viscous solution known as "viscose."
