Application In Viscose Fiber
Caustic soda flakes, also known as sodium hydroxide, play a critical role in making viscose fiber. Viscose is a type of rayon, which is a man-made fiber derived from cellulose. The process of making viscose fiber involves several steps, and caustic soda is used in one of the key steps known as the "causticization" process.
During the causticization process, cellulose is treated with a solution of caustic soda flakes to convert it into alkali cellulose. This process involves dissolving the cellulose in a solution of caustic soda and heating it to a high temperature. The caustic soda breaks down the cellulose molecule, making it easier to dissolve and react with other chemicals. The resulting alkali cellulose is a yellowish-brown substance that is used as a precursor to viscose.
In the next step, the alkali cellulose is aged and treated with carbon disulfide to form a viscous solution known as "viscose." This solution is then extruded through spinnerets into a bath of dilute sulfuric acid, where the cellulose regenerates into solid fibers. These fibers are then washed, bleached, and finished to produce the final viscose fiber.
Therefore, caustic soda flakes play a critical role in the production of viscose fibers by converting cellulose into alkali cellulose, which is a key precursor in the production of viscose solution.
