Solid caustic soda is a white solid with strong hygroscopicity. After absorbing tide, it melts and drains water. It can absorb water and carbon dioxide in the air to form sodium carbonate. Crisp, easily soluble in water, alcohol, glycerol, insoluble in acetone. When melting, a great deal of heat is released. An aqueous solution is slippery and alkaline. Highly corrosive, can burn skin, destroy fibrous tissue. Contact with aluminium at high temperatures produces hydrogen. It can neutralize with acids and form a variety of salts. Liquid sodium hydroxide (that is, soluble alkali) is purple-blue liquid, soapy and greasy, and its properties resemble solid alkali.

Application of caustic soda in aquatic desulfurization
Aquatic desulfurization is a process used in the petroleum industry to remove sulfur from crude oil. Solid caustic soda, also known as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), plays an important role in this process.
