1.Delignification: One of the primary uses of sodium hydroxide in cellulose pulp production is for delignification. Lignin is a natural polymer that holds cellulose fibers together in wood. Sodium hydroxide breaks down the lignin, separating the cellulose fibers and allowing them to be processed into pulp. This process is essential for producing high-quality pulp that can be used to make a variety of paper products.
2.Digestion: Sodium hydroxide is also used in the digestion process, where wood chips or other raw materials are broken down into pulp.
